How to Evaluate Player Value

Advanced8 min read

Points Per Game Analysis

The most fundamental metric for player valuation is PPG (Points Per Game). However, context matters:

  • Recent trends: Weight the last 4 weeks more heavily than early season
  • Opponent adjustments: Did they feast on weak defenses or dominate elite ones?
  • Game script: Were they in positive or negative game scripts?

2025 Season Real-Time Examples (Week 8)

Christian McCaffrey - RB1 Overall (Week 8 Update)

Week 8 Performance: Career-low 6.8 PPG vs Texans (25 rush yards, 8 carries, 3 catches, 43 yards). This highlights volatility in rushing efficiency (3.1 YPC) despite elite receiving volume (46 catches on 60 targets through Week 8). Week 9 Outlook: Matchup vs Giants (30th-ranked rush defense, 148.9 yards/game allowed) presents positive bounce-back opportunity. 17.6 PPG average remains elite despite bad Week 8.

Ja'Marr Chase - WR1/WR2 Contender (November Surge)

November Dominance: Chase has posted 25 receptions, 482 yards, and 5 TDs in just 3 November games (highest in the NFL for any WR). With Joe Flacco at QB: averaging 28.1 PPR points/game (up from 12.6 PPR overall). Target rate increased to 18 targets/game average. Season stats: WR3 position at 12.6 PPR PPG (100.6 total points through Week 8). Week 9 vs Bears: Top QB matchup opportunity (Bears defense vulnerable to WRs).

Justin Jefferson - WR2 Overall

Elite WR despite season-long inconsistency. 2025 consensus: better than CeeDee Lamb due to consistency and stable QB situation. 1,533 yards pace through Week 8.

Volume Metrics

Volume is king in fantasy football. Key metrics to track:

Snap Count Percentage

Players on the field more have more opportunities. Target 70%+ snap shares for consistent production.

Target/Touch Share

What percentage of team opportunities do they command? 20%+ is elite territory for skill players.

Red Zone Usage

Touchdowns win weeks. Track red zone targets and carries—this predicts future scoring.

Schedule Strength Analysis

Remaining schedule dramatically impacts player value:

  • Playoff schedule: Weeks 15-17 matter most for contenders
  • Defensive matchups: Identify favorable stretches to buy
  • Bye week timing: Factor this into trade timing
