Position Scarcity and Value

Understanding Positional Scarcity

Not all positions are created equal. Some positions have many startable options (WR), while others have very few (TE). This scarcity directly impacts trade value. A player isn't valuable in isolation—they're valuable relative to what else is available at their position.

The Scarcity Hierarchy

  1. 1. Elite TE (Kelce, Andrews tier): Massive scarcity premium
  2. 2. Top-12 RB: High scarcity, league-winning position
  3. 3. Top-5 QB: Moderate scarcity, but only need 1
  4. 4. Top-24 WR: Deep position, many options available
  5. 5. TE13-20: All roughly replacement level

RB Scarcity: The Market Driver

Running back scarcity is the single most important concept in fantasy trading. Here's why:

🏈 Limited Bell Cow RBs

Most NFL teams use committees. Only 8-12 RBs consistently get 15+ touches per game. In a 12-team league, that's barely 1 per team.

💔 Injury Rates

RBs get injured more than any other position. This depletes the already-thin position throughout the season.

📊 Value Over Replacement

The RB12 might score 15 PPG while RB24 scores 8 PPG—a 7-point gap. The WR12 scores 14 PPG while WR24 scores 11 PPG—only 3 points. RB scarcity is real.

The TE Premium

Tight end is the most polarized position:

  • Elite tier (top 3): Worth a low-end RB1 in trades. Kelce is essentially a WR1 at the TE spot.
  • Mid-tier (TE4-8): Solid weekly starters, modest trade value
  • Replacement level (TE9+): All interchangeable, stream weekly

The gap between TE1 and TE12 is often 6-8 points per week—massive for one roster spot.

WR Depth: The Abundant Position

Wide receiver is the opposite of scarce:

  • • 50+ WRs score 10+ PPG in any given week
  • • Waiver wire consistently produces startable WRs
  • • Small gap between WR15 and WR35 in points

Trading Implication: Don't overvalue WRs. They're easier to replace than RBs. A WR2 for RB2 swap typically favors whoever gets the RB.

Applying Scarcity to Trades

Use positional scarcity to win trades:

Trade WR depth for RB scarcity: Package WR2+WR3 for a RB1

Target TE-needy teams: If you have TE depth, extract premium value

Exploit QB overvaluation: Many casuals overvalue QBs. Sell high if you can.
